The growing trend of desktop virtualisation has facilitated the reduction of management costs associated with traditional systems and access to services from devices with different capabilities. However, desktop virtualisation requires controlling the interactivity provided by an infrastructure and the quality of experience perceived by users. This paper proposes a methodology for the quantification of interactivity based on the measurement of the time elapsed between user interactions and the associated responses. Measurement error is controlled using a novel mechanism for the detection of screen changes, which can lead to erroneous measurements. Finally, a campus virtual desktop infrastructure and the Amazon WorkSpaces solution are analysed using this proposed methodology. The results demonstrate the importance of the location of virtualisation infrastructure and the types of protocols used by remote desktop services.

How to centralizing manage desktop resource and protect critical information from leaking, more and more enterprise choose implementing cloud desktop services. But when working environment gradually move form PC to cloud desktop services, if the cloud desktop doesn't operate smoothly, it will result in the enterprise not working properly. So how to ensure the service quality of cloud desktop will become the most challenging thing for the enterprise. And our research team has proposed one prototype for verifying the service quality of cloud desktop services. This paper will focus on the technologies related to this service quality verification platform. In Chapter II, we give the introduction of cloud desktop services. In Chapter III, we talk about the testing skills related to cloud desktop services. And the conclusion is given in Chapter IV.

Drug design is a challenging and computationally intensive task. Chemists are often faced with handling huge amounts of data as well as with working with huge amounts of computational resources. This paper shows that using the BOINC system as a private, dedicated desktop grid a community, like the EU CancerGrid chemist community, can easily set up its own high-end infrastructure based on available and inexpensive desktop computers. The CancerGrid Computing System described in the paper can easily be adapted for the needs of other user communities having similar infrastructure requirements.

Cloud computing has recently become a significant technology trend in the IT field. Among the related technologies, desktop virtualization has been applied to various commercial applications since it provides many advantages, such as lower maintenance and operation costs and higher utilization. However, the existing solutions offer a very limited performance for 3D graphics applications. Therefore, we propose a novel method in which rendering commands are not executed at the host server but rather are delivered to the client through the network and are executed by the client's graphics device. This method prominently reduces server overhead and makes it possible to provide a stable service at low cost. The results of various experiments prove that the proposed method outperforms all existing solutions.

Changes presented by cloud computing-shared computing services, applications, and storage available to end users via the Internet-have the potential to seriously alter how libraries provide services, not only remotely, but also within the physical library, specifically concerning challenges facing the typical desktop computing experience. Libraries have invested time and money in establishing an infrastructure to support a particular kind of computing experience, and advances in cloud computing may make this type of experience obsolete. One of the ways libraries have added value to their services has been by implementing library commons. A key component to these commons has been desktop computing. Cloud computing offers applications via a Web browser, meaning that the applications can run independently of the local hardware and operating system, calling into question the necessity of traditional desktop computing. As libraries have shown in the past, they have the capability to assess challenging situations and adapt to provide users a beneficial experience.

Providing pervasive access to expensive, computational software such as Matlab and SPSS has always been a logistical and licensing challenge for a faculty who want to train their students with industry standard software. In addition, the faculty who want to manage lab exercises, assignments and exams are led to use e-mail to send and receive large files, thus limiting their ability to access and assist in the work-in-progress of students. In this paper, we present the methodology and results from our 'VDPilot' feasibility study to address such challenges by hosting virtual desktops for classroom labs within a federated university system in Ohio. The study leverages universities' pre-existing high-speed network access at the regional-level in order to: 1) assess the user quality of experience (QoE) of accessing desktop applications remotely compared to physically going to a computing lab, and 2) analyse the challenges and requirements for a shared service amongst collaborating universities.

Thanks to Web 2.0 technologies, many computer-supported activities are provided on-line, which enhances the possibility of sharing information and resources. In particular, the concept of service cloud is emerging as a paradigm for offering Web-based services based on an open distributed architecture. In this paper, the authors propose a framework supporting the management of Collaborative Service Clouds, i.e., open, Web-based environments that enable the integration of heterogeneous services, and provide a user-centered unified management of business and private activities. The management of Collaborative Service Clouds is enabled by an open architecture, which provides services and data synchronization, coupled with a set of core applications supporting essential aspects of the functionality of the environment.
